Mission Moment: Remembering Attorney D. Hope Watson

Today’s Mission Moment: We Honor the Memory of our Colleague, D. Hope Watson

– Thoughts from Center CEO, Dr. Jennie Stephens

I had the pleasure of meeting Hope Watson in 2010 when she was a student at Charleston School of Law and volunteered at CHPPtm to assist us with identifying the heirs’ property in our seven-county service area. She was so pleasant and was thorough in researching the tax records.

In 2014, Hope returned to become the CHPPtm‘s outreach coordinator of its Sustainable Forestry Program. Although she was a licensed attorney at the time, she embraced engaging our landowners and learning about forestry.

Hope’s personality, relationships developed as an outreach coordinator, and knowledge of the law helped her transition easily to a CHPPtm staff attorney. She became a formidable attorney providing legal education, advice and counsel and extended legal services to heirs’ property owners across the CHPPtm‘s service area.

Hope never met a stranger. With her ageless face and dynamic personality, people would often say that she reminded them of a relative—their daughter, granddaughter, sibling, etc.

Hope was also known for the ability to debate. She could always pick any opposing side and stand her ground on why you should think or feel about the issue the way she did. Sometimes, these debates led to friendly disagreements, but no one could stay angry at Hope for long; you loved and respected her so much that you soon forgot what the argument was about.

Last, but not least, Hope was the supplier of chocolate candy for the office. Of course, we will miss this, but more than anything, we will miss the presence of our dynamic colleague and friend who left a lasting mark on the CHPPtm and helped shape its development for seven of its 16 years. May you rest in peace, D. Hope Watson AND I’ll always remember that there is hope in every situation.

It is with a heavy heart that we announce the passing of our colleague and friend, Hope Watson, after experiencing a short illness.  The Center has compiled a series of individual tributes they would like to share about Hope.  To view these, please click on the link below.
