How to Find Out More

WE CAN HELP YOU!

1. Find out what your rights, responsibilities and risks are when you own heirs’ property (HP) and what steps you need to take to resolve your HP issues.

2. Find out how to manage your forested acres to increase the economic benefit from your family land.

FIRST – YOU MUST RESOLVE YOUR HEIRS’ PROPERTY ISSUES. Remember…with each passing generation, more heirs become involved making it harder to reach a family agreement. DON’T WAIT! Now is the time to resolve your heirs’ property issues. Here are the ways you can find out what you need to know to protect your heirs’ property and make informed decisions about it.

“ADVICE AND COUNSEL”

Call the Center’s Paralegal at (843) 745-7055 to schedule a FREE 1-HOUR  “Advice and Counsel” appointment with a Center attorney to talk about your specific heirs’ property issues.

Here’s what you will need to bring to your “Advice and Counsel” appointment:

  • Proof of Identification
  • All documents pertaining to the property, such as: plats, deeds, Will(s), receipts, surveyor’s documents, etc.
  • Any and all information pertaining to persons whose name appears on the title such as birth certificate(s), death certificate(s), marriage certificate(s), divorce decrees and Will(s).

ATTEND AN EDUCATION SEMINAR

Throughout the year, the Center’s attorney conducts combined Heirs’ Property (HP) and Sustainable Forestry (SF) education seminars to explain: 1) what heirs’ property is and isn’t, 2) the importance of having a will drafted, 3) tax policies and procedures, 4) the steps that need to be taken to resolve HP issues, and 5) how to increase income from your forestland (you must own a minimum of 10 acres) through sustainable forest management. Click on our Calendar to see when and where the next HP/SF seminar is scheduled near you or CALL the Center to schedule one in your community at:  (843) 745-7055 / toll free (866)657-2676.

At the seminar, the Center will also provide you with educational materials to share with family and friends.

HAVE YOUR WILL DRAFTED

Throughout the year, the Center conducts FREE Wills Clinics in our service area to help prevent the growth of heirs’ property.  Your simple Will will be drafted by the Center’s attorneys and local, volunteer attorneys.  These clinics are held in community churches and civic centers across our service area.  Click on our Calendar to see when we are offering a Wills Clinic near you, or call the Center to schedule one in your community: (843) 745-7055 or toll free (866)657-2676.

If you live or own HP outside the state of South Carolina, contact other members of the Heirs’ Property Retention Coalition for assistance.
