Our Work » Our Mission

The Center for Heirs' Property Preservation (the Center) is celebrating its "Fifth Anniversary" of fulfilling its mission to serve, support and empower heirs' property owners and their communities.

How do we do it?  By providing free, legal education and outreach seminars, legal services, mediation and community building activities in our six-county service area.

History of the CenterCHPP Service Area
The Center began as the Heirs' Property Preservation Project funded by the Ford Foundation under the auspices of the Coastal Community Foundation (CCF)in October 2002. The Project's initial partners were the South Carolina Bar Foundation, Penn Center, South Carolina Appleseed Legal Justice Center, and South Carolina Legal Services, formally South Carolina Centers for Equal Justice.

In January 2005, the Center was launched as an independent, non-profit to serve low-income heirs' property (HP) owners in Beaufort, Berkeley, Charleston, Dorchester and Georgetown counties-- counties greatly impacted by development. Colleton County was added in 2007.
